Spring
Deep moss linen against pale jade pillows, a brushed pewter throw at the foot, a clear glass carafe of spring water on a slate tray with three river stones. The bedroom of a keeper who treats their rest like a small ritual.

A Veve Reading
of the lwa Simbi
Fresh-water magic and study — moss, river-stone, and jade.

The Reading
Simbi is the lwa of fresh-water springs, of magic, and of the slow scholarship that reveals the world's hidden mechanisms. He is the serpent who lives at the bottom of the well, the keeper of the cold, clear water that the village depends on, and the patron of those whose work is to study, to heal, to read the signs.
He stands for fresh-water magic — the cool, contemplative kind. He presides over scholars, magicians, healers, herbalists, librarians, and anyone whose craft asks for patience and quiet rooms. His blessing is depth of attention: the rare ability to sit with a question long enough that it begins to answer itself.
Carried across the water from the Kongo and Dahomean traditions of Central and West Africa, Simbi became, in Haiti, the family of fresh-water serpent lwa who guard springs and teach magic. He is sometimes a single lwa, sometimes a court — Simbi Andezo of the two waters, Simbi Makaya of the bush, Simbi Dlo of the spring. His offerings are clear water, white rice, and the careful attention of a student. To make a room for him is to agree that quiet study is sacred — and that some of the deepest knowing arrives only when you slow down enough to listen to the spring.
