Erzulie Freda

Erzulie Freda Dahomey is the lwa of love, beauty, jewelry, perfume, and the soft luxuries of life. She is the one who teaches that tenderness is not weakness, and that to be soft on purpose is one of the bravest things a person can do.

She stands for cultivated affection — love that is dressed, perfumed, and offered like a meal. She presides over romantic love, friendship, self-regard, and the small daily rituals that make a body feel held: a bath, a clean sheet, a flower kept in water.

Carried across the water from Dahomey, Erzulie Freda became, in Haiti, the lwa who arrives in pink and white silks, in three wedding rings, in the scent of rose and jasmine. She weeps easily, because she loves easily — and her tears are part of how she blesses. To make a room for her is to agree that beauty is sacred work.
